Timothy Tuition Program History

The Timothy Tuition Program, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was created in 2008 in memory of our son, Timothy Leighton Tanner, a Program Services Counselor for foster children in Northern California and Nevada.

Initially this program was focused on college or trade school tuition needs, such as assistance in registering for college or trade school, books, tablets, pens, bus passes, etc. However, from the start we received requests from Foster Care Counselors for so much more. One of the biggest requests has been for suitcases and backpacks so foster youth can store their personal belongings in a safe place, instead of the big plastic bag that is provided to them as they move from their biological home or foster home to another foster home. Shoes, clothing, books and personal items we take for granted each day are often desperately needed by these children.

The purpose of this organization is to fulfill everyday needs of foster children of every age in Northern California. Grants and donations are received from thoughtful, considerate people and organizations around the country.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates there are 20,000 unadopted adolescents per year leaving the foster care system at the young age of 18, often with no plans or provisions to transfer legal custody to a biological relative or alternative caregiver. Can you imagine being 18 and being emancipated from the state program without a safe place to live?  Our program helps supply the necessities to programs and organizations that will help guide these students to a productive and safe future.
